Week 2 1/28 Part II

Standards and laws are a benefit for schools, including my school. Most teachers adhere to the standards because they follow a teacher's manual which adheres to the curriculum and requires very little individualized out of the box thinking. Although some might argue that standards stifle creativity, standards insure that all children in a particular grade level have some consistency in what they are learning. Without standards, teachers would create and individual curriculum package.

I was not initially aware that there was a move in education to create national standards, but I think it's a good idea. If America is going to survive in a global economy, then we need to be sure that children across the country are being taught the same things.

  1. Do you think we should have a national assessment test then with all students in the country taking the same assessment, or should we continue with state tests?

  2. Having all students learn from the same curriculum may even be a good way to starting a good base for learning. If students were to be exposed all to the same curriculum, this would enable the same teaching across the board. I mean it’s only a suggestion, may be a bad one, but one to think about. Who knows! It may not be best in all subject areas to combine curriculum. Just a thought.

  3. I agree that all students should be taught the same thing throughout the nation. You also make a great point that the standards bring consistency to what the students need to learn. It may hinder creativity for the teacher, but it will keep the students on the right track.

  4. I DO think that there should be a national asssessment test instead of state tests. I know standardized tests get a bad rap, but I see value in them.

  5. A national assessment test is a lot more logical than state tests. I know that there are major differences in curriculum from one state to another and I think this needs to be changed.
