  1. Very nice video! You are right- I work in a secondary school and there is very little emphasis on reading comprehension for the older students. Even during college I only took one course about how to teach reading. This doesn't really make sense considering that students need to be able to read critically for all subjects, as well as the standardized tests.

  2. I too second that there is little to no empahasis on professional development for reading comprehension. I teach math and have been quesitioning for far too long why my students cannot read word problems and express what is wanted from them. I always assumed it was the mathematical content that was throwing them until about two years ago when I started to implement published journalreading, newspaper articles and other reading in to my class did I realize that my students could not comprehen. My SENIORS could not read, formulate an opinion and discuss. I have been trying to find a worth while reading comp workshop, so if you have any in mind...let me know! Nice video. I enjoyed it.

  3. Elise- Nice work on your video. I concur with your point and ad that few secondary teachers teach reading or writing or comprehension skills. They assign the work and then are shocked when their student can't do what they asked them to do or at the level they expect. As teachers, we need to teach and model more what expect.

  4. Uh oh... we are in trouble! I know my students struggle with reading our biology textbook - and it's an honors class. The same book is used for all levels of the freshmen biology. It is not a very useful teaching tool when the majority of the students cannot understand the readings. It is a major problem. Your video does a nice job at bringing that to our attention.
